Two communities are currently converging on the same problem from opposite directions. Agent builders are discovering that fleets of capable agents still need decomposition, cadence, checkpoints, and artifacts — coordination, in a word. And scaled-agile practitioners are asking what their discipline means when some of the delivery work is done by machines. We think each has what the other is missing, and that the meeting point deserves its emerging name: agentic SAFe.

Why a method — and why this one

The reliability argument comes first. A probabilistic model is at its best — most reliable and cheapest — when its task is small, bounded, and well-specified; reliability at scale then has to come from the arrangement, not the individual reasoner, exactly as it always has for human organizations (the argument in full).

That is precisely the problem the Scaled Agile Framework spent years solving for humans. Its portfolio → program → iteration decomposition turns large intent into small, bounded work; its ceremonies impose cadence and review; its artifacts — epics, features, stories — make intent inspectable at every level. One can debate SAFe’s weight for small human teams, but for coordinating many bounded, fallible workers toward one strategic intent, its structure is the most battle-tested design available. Agents did not create the need for it; they removed the last excuse to skip it — an agent never tires of ceremony, and ceremony is where the checking lives.

So rather than invent a new coordination scheme for agents, we chose to make agents implement a proven one.

Agentic transformation with a method

This is also, we believe, the answer to the pattern consultancies now call the pilot trap: agentic pilots that impress and then fail to become an operating model. A pilot proves a capability; an operating model needs the capability organized — decomposed, gated, auditable, repeatable. That is what a method supplies, and why we describe the whole approach as agentic transformation with a method: you do not wait for a smarter model, you make the models you have implement a discipline you already trust.

What running SAFe with agents looks like

In the Systemic Agentic Framework, three orchestrators — one per SAFe layer — dispatch a bench of specialist role agents: the portfolio layer tests the strategic bet, the program layer tests the feature shape, the iteration layer tests the code that ships. Ceremonies become governed workflows producing typed, schema-validated artifacts, so the method is an enforceable contract rather than a suggestion. Underneath, a deterministic agentic harness resolves every step, checks conditions and authorization, validates every artifact before it lands, and journals the lot — from persisted state, never from an agent’s account of itself.

And at the close of every layer sits a human ★ gate. Agents bring evidence through checks and sequence; the decisions that matter stay with the people accountable for them. The framework’s roles do not disappear — they concentrate where they always mattered most: on disposition.

What stays, and an invitation

What stays is SAFe itself. The method is not simplified for the machines; the machines are held to the method — which is exactly what makes their output trustworthy enough to merge. Everything above runs local-first and open (Apache-2.0), on your working tree, under your git history.
